AuthorOur friend from Argentina, Ernesto Muzzio, gave us another tough scenario in the bidding: Your partner's double of 1 Heart shows spades, not necessarily only 4. He could have doubled with 5 and a hand without the strength to invite (1 Spade would have been a TRF to notrump). Pick your poison, then scroll down to see the opinion of our experts. Miguel Villas Boas: 5NT, asking partner to pick the best strain for slam. Partner should be void in hearts, all my cards are working. We may even have a grand, but there is no way to be sure about it. Roberto Barbosa: 4 Hearts. We will probably play in diamonds. I don't think that partner would have bid 4 Diamonds if he had more than just 4 cards in spades. If partner bids 4 Spades, I will bid 5 Diamonds, and he will have information to move on. If he bids 5 Diamonds, I will pass. Diego Brenner: 4 Hearts. 7 may be laydown. Over 4 Spades by partner, I will bid 5NT, pick a slam. Over 5 Diamonds, I will pass. Paulo Brum: 5NT, pick a slam. There is no guarantees that we will even make slam, or we may have a grand slam. At least I have the best shot at picking the right strain -- we can play in clubs or diamonds, or even (unlikely) in spades. Marcelo Branco: 5NT, pick a slam. The full hand was: Did you reach a good contract?
